Andrew Flintoff has been appointed as coach of the Northern Superchargers in a major new career role following a serious crash with Top Gear.

The England legend suffered a horrific crash last December while filming a stunt with the BBC show that left him fighting for his life in hospital.

It has left the 45-year-old visibly scarred from the incident and he has gradually returned to the public eye over the past 11 months.

He returned to the England cricket set up briefly as a coach in September.

And now he is back in the pavilion again after being appointed as coach of the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred.

Flintoff will take over the role, replacing former England wicketkeeper James Foster, who left the job after two years in charge.

Freddie said in a statement: “I am excited to have been appointed head coach of the Northern Superchargers men’s team.”

The cricket legend made his first public outing in September after joining the England squad in a non-paid capacity as they faced New Zealand in an ODI series.

It was the first time that he braved the outside world in public since his horrific crash.

While driving an open-topped three-wheel Morgan Super 3 car, the vehicle flipped before sliding along the track when he was driving at high speed in December 2022. He suffered broken ribs and facial injuries.

Flintoff was coaxed back into the sport by his close pal and former teammate Rob Key, who is also managing director of England men’s cricket.

David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd has also spoke out on Flintoff’s gradual return, speaking in September.

“I think that’s the way he’s looking. He’s done telly, he’s done boxing. This is a perfect time for him to come back,” Lloyd said.

“I’m a big advocate for iconic players like that to spend some time away from the game and then come back.”

As well as becoming the new coach of the Northern Superchargers, Flintoff will also travel to Abu Dhabi as part of the coaching staff for the Lions, who are on a training camp.
