Andrew Flintoff

Lancashire have announced that Andrew Flintoff will not play competitive cricket again this season.

The 32-year-old, who has not played since last August year after undergoing major knee surgery, had been hoping to make his comeback on Monday in a one-day game for his county's second XI.

But the all-rounder was pulled out on the advice of his medical team and Lancashire have now revealed he will not return before the season ends in September.

"Whilst Andrew has made significant progress, the combined opinion is that he is not quite ready for a return to cricket,” said Lancashire's cricket director, Mike Watkinson.

"He will continue his rehabilitation into the winter months and we will constantly monitor and review his progress so that he is better equipped for a return to action."

The latest setback means Flintoff will not play for the Chennai Super Kings in next month's Twenty20 Champions League.

It also raises major doubts over whether he will be available for England's one-day squad for the winter tour of Australia.
