Ice Hockey side Boston Bruins clearly enjoyed their Stanley Cup final win over Vancouver Canucks. After parading the trophy to fans in the city, they headed to a club and spent $156,000 at the bar. Sports stars celebrating their success heavily is nothing new, however…
MIKE TINDALL
Ahead of his own royal wedding to Zara Phillips, Mike Tindall recently racked up a staggering £12,000 bar bill on his stag weekend in Florida. Along with Zara Phillips' brother and best man and former Gloucester and England team-mate Iain Balshaw they drank and drank – key ingredients to a successful stag do.
CHELSEA
In 2008, the Blues players took the rather unusual step of hitting London's Chinawhite to celebrate a Champions League triumph over Liverpool. It was reported that members of the team ran up an estimated £10,000 bill as they celebrated until 4am.
Barry Ferguson AND ALLAN MCGREGOR
After an eight hour session following Scotland's 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat by the Netherlands in 2009, the pair spent around £1,500 on alcohol. Then Rangers midfielder Ferguson and his goalie team-mate were dropped from the following match against Iceland after the marathon binge. They were then 'banned for life' from international duty for making obscene gestures to photographers while they sat on the bench, though McGregor is once again donning Scotland colours.
CALCUTTA CUP
Not so much remembered for the game but for the mischievous events afterwards. Scotland's John Jeffrey and England's Dean Richards got into a spot of bother with the rugby authorities in 1988 when the pair took the Calcutta Cup out in Edinburgh after the match and played football with the cup along Princes Street. Jeffrey later said: “We visited two or three hostelries and the cup got damaged during that time. I remember looking at it – and I must have sobered up. I thought: 'Good Lord, this is a bit of a mess.'” The Scot was banned for five months while Deano escaped with a one-match suspension.
MAN UNITED
If you are going to celebrate Christmas you may as well go nuts as United's players did in 2006. Reports of pricey rounds, expensive food and even one player wetting himself due to the amount of alcohol flowing. In all, the total was just over the £40,000 mark – small change to a group of high earners, mind.
ANDREW FLINTOFF
As much as his legendary boozing endeared the cricketer to the nation, it did eventually cost him the England vice-captaincy. His 2005 Ashes-winning drinkathon was laughed off but the 2007 'Fredalo' incident was not. The all-rounder got himself into difficulty when he fell off a pedalo after a defeat to New Zealand and less than 48 hours until their next game against Canada at the World Cup in the Caribbean.
DAVID BOON
'Boony', 'king of kegs' – whatever you want to call him – set an astonishing and highly inadvisable record on one of the Australia cricket team's legendary drinking sessions while flying over to England for the Ashes. In 1989 Boon sank 53 cans on the plane. Rugby royal Tindall apparently attempted it on the way back from the 2003 World Cup but, according to Matt Dawson, it was with Fosters, which are twice the size of the stubbies and therefore Tindall passed out after 20.
GAZZA AND ENGLAND IN 1996
Shortly before Euro '96 Gascoigne and his international chums gathered in a Hong Kong bar for a 'dentist chair' drinking game. After images of the 'tired' looking footballers were splashed across the front and back pages, Gazza poked fun at the whole incident with his famous celebration following a fabulous strike against Scotland in the group stages.
ANDY FORDHAM
Portly darts player Fordham once claimed to drink 25 bottles of beer before matches, though his record was 62 in one day. “On a bender, like a three-week tournament, I'd start at 10 or 11 in the morning and carry on through, every day,” he said. David Boon eat your heart out.
HAYDEN FOXE
At the 2001 West Ham Christmas party and after running up a £2,000 bar bill, the Hammers defender answered nature's call on top of a bar in the Sugar Reef club. It was also reported that a reserve player had vomited on tables and chairs and, unsurprisingly, Foxe and his team-mates were asked to leave. Foxe was fined by the club for this festive session.
